Economic Geographies: Circuits, Flows and Spaces

Author: Ray Hudson

'The social and political power of the verity that there are no such things as economies, only economic geographies demands an analysis of the complex flows and relations implied by it. Kindred Strangers or The Portal to Lean Production

Kindred Strangers: The Uneasy Relationship between Politics and Business in America

Author: David Vogel

Notwithstanding the myriad forms of government assistance to American business, the relationship of business to politics in the United States remains a highly antagonistic one, characterized by substantial mutual distrust. This adversarial relationship is both reflected and reinforced not only in American business ideology, but also in America's unique legalistic and confrontational style of regulation, the political strategies of the public interest movement, the American approach to American industrial policy, and the distinctive way Americans think about the subject of business ethics. This volume brings together more than two decades of scholarship on business and politics by one of the leading authorities on this subject.

These essays also explore a number of critical contemporary issues, including the ongoing debate over the scope and extent of business power in America, the growth of shareholder protests and consumer boycotts, the changing politics of consumer and environmental regulation, and the emergence of both public and business interest in business ethics. In addition, they place the contemporary dynamics of American business-government relations in both an historical and comparative context. Finally these essays demonstrate e the importance of integrating the study of business by political scientists with the study of politics by students of management.

The Portal to Lean Production: Principles and Practices for Doing More with Less (Series on Resource Management)

Author: John Nicholas

The Portal to Lean Production: Principles and Practices for Doing More with Less describes the steps, difficulties, and rewards of implementing lean production. The book moves beyond concepts to address practical matters. The authors provide enough information for you to begin implementing lean production within your organization. This book applies a model-the Portal to Lean Production-to illustrate principles and practices. The model reappears at the start of every chapter and serves to connect the concepts of each chapter with those in other chapters, and with basic lean production principles. This volume contains short vignettes that appear in every chapter of actual lean production implementations. Following these real-world examples, the text provides expanded coverage of topics to enable you to learn and apply concepts and principles. The authors enable you to see the context, application, and practical issues associated with lean production concepts and methods before learning details. The vignettes, based upon the work experience of co-author Avi Soni, help connect the concepts and tie them to practical examples.

A Guide to Human Factors and Ergonomics or Engineered in Japan

A Guide to Human Factors and Ergonomics

Author: Martin Helander

Completely revised and updated, A Guide to Human Factors and Ergonomics, Second Edition presents a comprehensive introduction to the field. Building on the foundation of the first edition, titled Guide to Ergonomics of Manufacturing, the new title reflects the expanded range of coverage and applicability of the techniques you will find in the second edition. Each and every chapter contains new material and some have been entirely rewritten. Drawing on the author's experience in both teaching and industry, the book lays to rest the common myths and misconceptions that surround ergonomics.

Unlike most ergonomics and human factors books that emphasize the physical, this one gives a broad overview of cognitive as well as physical ergonomics. Written in an accessible style, it presents a systems approach to human factors and ergonomics that leads to complete understanding. The author demonstrates how to collect data on users and operators and how to convert the data to good design, and offers a practical guide to the design and analysis of systems. Design oriented, systems oriented, and results oriented, this text provides the tools needed to solve systems problems and develop adequate design solutions.

Engineered in Japan: Japanese Technology-Management Practices

Author: Jeffrey K Liker

Engineered in Japan presents a unique and comprehensive examination of technology management in the most successful Japanese companies: unique in that all chapters go beyond superficial descriptions of stylized practices to look in depth at particular issues, often contradicting or qualifying the conventional wisdom; comprehensive in that it covers the entire technology life cycle from basic R&D, to development engineering, to manufacturing processes, to learning from the Japanese.
Each chapter is based on original research by noted scholars in the field, and identifies technology management practices that have become a major source of competitive advantage for highly successful Japanese companies. Engineered in Japan documents the best practices from such companies as Toyota, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Nippondenso, and discusses how these technology management practices can be usefully adopted in other cultural contexts.
Going beyond past observations, the authors all delve below the surface of Japanese management approaches. They look more closely than has been done before at how particular methods are applied, and they identify some new practices that have not yet been highlighted in books on Japanese methods.
Presenting recent data that contradict some conventional thinking about U.S.-Japanese differences, they look at old techniques from a new perspective.
"U.S. managers can perhaps learn more from the process of creation in Japan and the organizational structures that support innovation," say the editors in their introduction, "than from the particular approaches, tools, and technologies created." A running theme throughout the book is that Japanese managers andengineers tend to think in terms of systems, focusing not just on the parts but on the connections between them. Engineered in Japan is must reading for technology managers and engineers, along with anyone interested in Japanese business, engineering, and management.

"The particular benefit of this book is that it distinguishes a technology life cycle and analyzes each of its stages: research and development, process and product development, manufacturing management and methods, technology deployment, and organizational learning."--Booklist

"In the end, the edited volume provides a smorgasbord for readers: some will try every offering, others will sample only those which are most appealing."--Journal of Product Innovation Management

BookList

The particular genius of the Japanese has been their ability to adopt, adapt, and apply technology. In 1991, in an effort to learn from ways in which the Japanese manage technology successfully, Congress authorized $10 million for the Department of Defense to establish a cooperative program for U.S. and Japanese industry and technology management training. Part of the program required that the "best practices" in manufacturing and the management of technology be identified, and a number of universities were given grants to conduct studies. Each of this book's 17 chapters is based on original research done by the University of Michigan's Japan Technology Management Program from 1991 to 1993. The particular benefit of this book is that it distinguishes a technology life cycle and analyzes each of its stages: research and development, process and product development, manufacturing management and methods, technology deployment, and organizational learning. Offering a comprehensive overview, this book is recommended for technology and management collections.

Modernization from the Other Shore or Wealth and Freedom

Modernization from the Other Shore: American Intellectuals and the Romance of Russian Development

Author: David C Engerman

From the late nineteenth century to the eve of World War II, America's experts on Russia watched as Russia and the Soviet Union embarked on a course of rapid industrialization. Captivated by the idea of modernization, diplomats, journalists, and scholars across the political spectrum rationalized the enormous human cost of this path to progress. In a fascinating examination of this crucial era, David Engerman underscores the key role economic development played in America's understanding of Russia and explores its profound effects on U.S. policy.

American intellectuals from George Kennan to Samuel Harper to Calvin Hoover understood Russian events in terms of national character. Many of them used stereotypes of Russian passivity, backwardness, and fatalism to explain the need for—and the costs of—Soviet economic development. These costs included devastating famines that left millions starving while the government still exported grain.

This book is a stellar example of the new international history that seamlessly blends cultural and intellectual currents with policymaking and foreign relations. It offers valuable insights into the role of cultural differences and the shaping of economic policy for developing nations even today.

Foreign Affairs

This fascinating, full-blown account of how Russia was reflected in the American mind ranges from the late 1800s, across the 1917 Revolution, and into the harsh, hopeful, tragic assault of modernization in the 1930s. What began with the travel adventures of people such as the senior George Kennan by the turn of the century widened to include the founders of Russian studies in the United States, Archibald Cary Coolidge and Samuel Harper, as well as their students and wealthy well-connected patrons such as Charles Crane. They, the author argues, applied to the Russian autocracy and peasantry stereotypes of national character as surely as did their less expert forerunners and then exported these images into the Wilson, Coolidge, and Harding administrations. Their intellectual successors carried on, idealizing the modernizing model they expected the Soviet Union to be and closing their eyes to the human cost. Engerman digs deep into decades of published and unpublished writings by a broad spectrum of Russia experts and traces with skill their impact on government.

Globalization and The Poor or Practical Hydraulics Handbook

Globalization and The Poor

Author: Jay R Mandl

This book represents a new viewpoint of economic globalization. Until now, the debate has been polarized between those attacking globalization (such as the demonstrators at the WTO meetings), and its defenders (mostly in the U.S. business community). Jay Mandle argues that opponents fail to understand that broadly-based benefits for the poor are latent in the economic globalization process. Simultaneously, defenders have insufficiently acknowledged that it creates innocent victims who should be the object of ameliorative policies. Mandle describes effective policies to be adopted at the national and international levels to make globalization fair.

Labour Economics

Author: Steven W Smith

In the six years since the appearance of the first edition of Stephen Smith's book, labour economics has become a more firmly entrenched subject on the curriculum. Previously regarded as a subsection within industrial economics, there are now very few universities that do not devote a course to it in its own right. The focus of topics covered within it has also altered - the notion of human capital has now become much more central and microeconomic considerations are now more widely studied than macroeconomic phenomena.
The 2nd edition will address these changes and give greater centrality to microeconomics to reflect current course teaching. This excellent new book is a must-see for all those involved in Labour Economics.

The East in the West

Author: Jack Goody

The East in the West reassesses Western views of Asia, which much European history and social theory has seen as "static" or "backward." Jack Goody challenges these Eurocentric assumptions, including the notion of a special Western rationality, and differences in mercantile activity. Other factors "inhibiting" the East's development, such as the role of the family, have also been greatly exaggerated, and have contributed to a misunderstanding of both Eastern and Western history and society. This wide-ranging and provocative book begins to redress the balance.

Restoring Japan's Economic Growth

Author: Adam S Posen

This timely report by the Institute for International Economics has received worldwide coverage in leading newspapers and magazines, including The Economist, The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business Week, Asahi Shimbun and others. The author launched his book at the Central Bank of Japan in mid-September. While it is hoped that that the book will be read at the highest echelons of Japan's government in an attempt to reverse the country's economic downslide, it is also accessible to others with an interest in the country's economy.

Adam S. Posen, Research Fellow, is a monetary economist specializing in the political economy of macroeconomic performance in the industrial democracies. He is the author or co-author of numerous works on monetary policy, comparative financial systems, and international political economy including Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience (Princeton University Press 1998) and Why Central Bank Independence Does Not Cause Low Inflation (1993). He received his Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University, where he was an NSF Graduate Fellow from 1989-92. Prior to joining the Institute, he was Economist in International Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1994-97), Okun Memorial Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution (1993-94), and a Bosch Foundation Fellow in Germany (1992-93).

The Financial Times - Marvin Wolf

An excellent book.

Journal of Economic Literature - Charles Yuji Horioka

Its analysis is convincing, and its policy recommendations are...sensible. I strongly recommend it to economists and policymakers alike. I...hope that Japanese policymakers have the wisdom to heed his advice.

What People Are Saying

Robert Solomon
A thorough and compelling analysis of and prescription for Japan's economic weakness.

Robert Alan Feldman
Provocative . . . A major contribution to the debate on Japanese policy. . . Even creative destructionists can agree with the Posen Program.

Matthew Miller
The doomsday scenario (scaring officials in Washington and Tokyo) is laid out . . . by Adam Posen

Isamu Miyazaki
The . . .analysis and proposals are very interesting, useful, and timely...
— (Isamu Miyazaki, Special Advisor of the Daiwa Institute of Research and former Minister of Economic Planning Agency, Japan)

Benjamin Friedman
Japan's persistent stagnation is among the most important problems confronting the world economy today, and Adam Posen's treatment of it is the best I have seen. His analysis is right on the mark, and his policy porposals bear attention at the highest level of the Japanese government.

Globalization and the Postcolonial World or Concepts In Federal Taxation 2007 Edition

Globalization and the Postcolonial World: The New Political Economy of Development

Author: Ankie Hoogvelt

Globalization is at the heart of debates about the present phase of development of the world economy. In Globalization and the Postcolonial World, Ankie Hoogvelt joins these debates to examine the ways in which globalization is affecting the countries of the developing world. Taking a new look at historical trends and theories in development studies, Hoogvelt describes the diverse impacts of globalization in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, identifying different postcolonial responses in each of these regions.

New to this edition are sections on the new "digital" economy; the resurgence of the United States after decades of putative relative decline and the question of renewed U.S. dominance in the global system; and the volatility of the global financial markets culminating in the East Asia crisis of 1997. Part II has been thoroughly reconfigured and expanded, as have the chapters on East Asia and on Africa. Finally, the conclusions have been rethought in the light of the mushrooming cloud of antiglobalist protests.

Journal of Asian Studies - Christopher Chase-Dunn

This is a well-written textbook and a helpful review of recent theories of development . . . It formulates an innovative synthetic approach of its own and convincingly uses this approach to describe important recent changes in the Third World and in the global system.

30 Second Politics or Ethics in International Business

30-Second Politics: Political Advertising in the Eighties

Author: Montague Kern

"Advertising overwhelms news coverage. That is the essence of the point Montague Kern drives home repeatedly throughout her insightful examination of political advertising in the eighties. . . . Any professional interested in political advertising would profit from reading this book. It also would be useful to an undergraduate class on political communication or advertising." Journal of Communication "Kern's work joins a spate of books published in the 1980s on the nature, production, effect, and importance of televised political advertising in US elections. Not, however, old wine in a new bottle, it makes a distinct contribution in three respects. First, other works typically focus on spot advertising in only one type of electoral contest, primarily presidential, senatorial, or gubernatorial; Kern examines political ads at all electoral levels, in representative regions, and in a variety of mass media markets. Second, Kern employs multiple data gathering techniques beyond conventional content analysis of ads or surveys of voters' responses--interviews, a Delphic panel, and selected semiotic approaches. Finally, the book addresses changes in the character and impact of televised political spots since the 1970s, arguing that documentary news styles in ads have been replaced by those of commercial strategy of 'touching someone.'" Ethics in International Business: Decision-Making in a Global Political Economy

Author: John M Klin

Business takes place in an increasingly global environment, crossing political and cultural boundaries, and consequently ethical dilemmas arise. The central focus of this text lies in how to make and explain "best choice" judgments in international business situations.

This innovative textbook provides a topical and relevant analysis of the ethical dimensions of conducting business in a global political economy. From a starting point of applied ethics, the book introduces a common set of normative terms and analytical tools for examining and discussing real case scenarios.

Extensive real-world examples, presented in the form of exhibits, cover issues including:
* Foreign production, including sweatshops
* Export of hazardous products
* Testing and pricing of HIV-AIDS drugs
* Advertising tobacco, alcoholic beverages and infant formula
* Deceptive marketing techniques and bribery
* Religious and social discrimination
* Cultural impacts from "music, movies and malls"
*Environmental issues, including oil spills, rain forest preservation, global warming and genetically modified foods

Anyone with an interest in the ethical implications of international business, or the business implications of corporate responsibility in the global market, will find this book a thought-provoking yet balanced analysis. Clearly written, this book will be the textbook of choice in this increasingly important field.
