Description: This is a highly useful book on information technology (IT) strategic planning and implementation within healthcare organizations. It is well written, concise, on point and provides excellent illustrations and case studies to enhance its usefulness. The first edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: The purpose is to improve the ability of leaders of healthcare organizations to invest strategically and thoughtfully in IT and achieve desired organizational returns. This is a critical objective, as the benefits of IT will not be realized unless the intended outcomes are determined prior to implementation. The book meets its objectives at a high level administrative view:appropriate and on target for organizational leadership.
Audience: The author is a well-known and highly respected leader in organizational information technology strategy and implementation. He indicates that this book is written for healthcare administrators in top strategic decision positions. The book is essential for these individuals and it is of equivalent value to healthcare managers and IT professionals who must implement information technology strategies developed by organizational leadership.
Features: Two areas are focused on: IT conceptualization failures and IT implementation failures common to healthcare organizations. The book has effective explanations of these two areas. Readers learn what IT strategy is and the importance of aligning organizational purpose and business plans with IT strategy, and are provided well described case studies of organizations and how well they strategize and apply IT. The book uses diagrams well to teach complex concepts. The book is well written and the content is relevant. References are appropriate. However, the understanding and experience the author brings to the explanations of important points is of greater value.
Assessment: This is a book of exceptionally high quality that is essential in the libraries of healthcare organization leaders.
